A commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was evaluated for its ability to detect antibodies to Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP) in sera from horses that had been exposed to MAP. A total of 103 serum samples from horses that had been exposed to MAP through pasture were compared to 59 samples from non-exposed horses by indirect ELISA. A commercial ELISA was positive for 45/103 (44%) of the samples tested. The true seroprevalence of exposure to MAP in the horse population was thus 43%. The indirect ELISA test exhibited poor specificity, as 17 of the 59 non-exposed horses (29%) were positive. Differences in test results between serum samples from exposed and non-exposed horses were not significantly different. The ELISA test was not consistent in detecting seroconversion. This study indicates that the test did not detect antibodies early in the course of an infection. In addition, the test was not specific, as it also recognized antibodies to other mycobacterial species.Q:
